Zakros Hills

The Valley of Death near the Minoan site of Zakros
The drive from Zakros to Kato Zakros offers impressive views of the sea and the coast. There are, however, very few places to stop safely to take photographs until you see Zakros. There is a wide lay-by here with space for stopping. The exit of the Valley of the Dead is clearly visible behind the site. The Minoan palace of Zakros is near the beach. To the north of the palace is the mountain of Traostalos the site of a Minoan peak sanctuary. Excavations have shown recently that several other Minoan buildings in the form of watch towers were in the mountains nearby. The watch towers were linked with paved paths, and a wall surrounded the whole area, leaving an entrance only from the Zakros Gorge.
