Epano Archanes is 16km south of Heraklion on the Heraklion - Knossos - Archanes road. The area is a major Minoan site, and in addition contains several Byzantine churches.
The town is in the middle of the vineyard district and exports wine, raisins and grapes --a grape and wine festival is held in July. Archanes is also the location of three on-going archaeological excavations on Minoan sites. You may only view these through fences since they are closed to the public.
Der Ort Epano Arhanes befindet sich 16km s_dlich von Heraklion an der Strecke Iraklion - Knossos - Arhanes. In der Gegend besuchen wir eine bedeutende minoische Stätte und mehrere byzantinische Kirchen.
Die Stadt liegt mitten in einer Weingegend, wo Wein, Weinbeeren und Tafeltrauben zum Export kultiviert werden. Im Juli findet hier ein Trauben- und Weinfestival statt. Au-erdem sind in Arhanes zur Zeit archäologische Grabungen an drei minoischen Stätten im Gange, die aber f_r die _ffentlichkeit nicht zugänglich sind. Man kann den Arbeiten nur durch Zäune zusehen.
