The town of Paleochora is behind the castle on a small peninsula. Although it is rapidly growing as a tourist centre, it still retains much local colour. The main street is shut off to traffic during the summer evenings and the restaurants and activities of the town extend into the street. There are also many hotels and restaurants of all classes. Paleochora can be a base for many excursions in the area.
On both sides of the peninsula there are public beaches that have long, wide stretches of sand. Famous beaches west of the town are "Pachia Ammos" (Thick Sand), "Grammeno" (pebble and sandy beach), "Krios" (pebbles). On the east, "Yianiskari" is very popular. All beaches around Paleochora have amazing clear waters.
