Agia Pelagia is 20km west of Heraklion on the Heraklion - Rethymnon highway. Agia Pelagia was the site of an ancient Greek city. It is not clear which one it was, but some assume that it was Apolonia, the city that was destroyed by the Kydonians at 171 B.C. The name Agia Pelagia originates from the monastery of Agia Pelagia, approximately 1km west of the bay. In the wall of the old monastery there are two shields in relief and between them a coat of arms.

Wonderful hospitality and friendly place. Restaurants all very close and easy walking distance (as long as you are not staying in Panorama or the likes!!). Beach great for children. Alkion, Mythos, Le Gourmet, Bravo, Socrates - all good restaurants but our favourite is Alkion for friendliness, good food and all Greek family restaurant.

A beautiful village with a very sheltered beach with a calm bathing. There is a traffic-free

walkway all along the front with a fantastic selection of tavernas and restaurants. I can certainly recommend both the

Le Gourmet and Socrates restaurants. The Cretan

people are very welcoming which contributes to an atmosphere for a lovely holiday.

My wife and I have been visiting Aghia Pelagia

since 1990!
