The village of Zaros is 45km southwest of Heraklion on the Heraklion - Agia Varvara - Gergeri - Zaros road. It is in the centre of a valley irrigated by the Votomos spring and has very beautiful landscape, a gorge and Byzantine churches nearby.

We visited the lake at Zaros after our visit to Vrondissi Moni. The area was well maintained and the lake clean and picturesque. We ventured up to St. Nikolaos church where a new church is being constructed. From there the resident priest, a genuinely light-hearted and hospitable man, directed us to the path leading to the nearby Rouvas Gorge. We hiked to its opening: it was breathtaking! The next time we´ll do the whole gorge but for those who want a short walk(1 hour)it is well worthdoing. But be wary, you need good footwear!
