The beach at the Sarakiniko village on Gavdos
The beach at the Sarakiniko village on Gavdos
Located 24 nautical miles from Hora Sfakia, Gavdos is Crete's most southern island and the most southern point in Europe. During the summer months there are boats to Gavdos from Hora Sfakion and Paleohora. It is possible to go and return the same day but the island does not warrant a one day journey. The attraction in Gavdos is its isolation, beautiful beaches, and clear waters. To really enjoy these one should at least stay over-night.

I spend my holidays on Gavdos the last 5 years, last time was in june/july 2007, and there is no NATO base on the island. Sometime there are military exercises in the sky, which are quite noisy. There is a heliport, but there are not many flights. When there is a flight, it is usually an emergency flight to bring ill people to crete, because there is no real hospital on the island. The most dangerous insects I saw, are those red and black oriental hornets that might cause trouble, if they bite.

Some beaches on Gavdos are like paradise, if you like it quiet and don´t go there in august.

August is too crowded.

I recommend the beaches of Ag.Ioannis and Potamos. But to get to Potamos is a long and hard walk. You need good shoes and lots of water and food, because there is no taverna.

Ag.Ioannis is easier, coming from the port, you can take the bus there.

I was last year one month on the Gavdos Island. Too much insects. There are red worms in the wells, I´m afraid they are this worms of wells from Syria, which are life-dangerous. There are now helicopter NATO basis on hills. It is very noisy place now. I cannot recomendet for anybody. Brett.
