I walked along the SW coast of Crete 1978, arriving at Elafonisi, then one of the most desolate & beautiful places in the world, no facilities, only a brackish water well (into which I nearly fell), camped on the beach; I met six other people there, but they didn´t stay overnight, except one girl. We waded over to the island, found great swathes of scented Sea Lilies just at the top of the beach, where we embraced in the setting sun and did what mother nature intended us to do.

And now as far as I can see, hordes of visitors, Lilies long since trampled to death, camping probably forbidden, beer bars, holiday homes - God forbid. I will go back, but I expect to have memories of desolation, exquisite beauty and romance crushed by modern reality!

Thank God (or thank Dog) that people like Mr Mick Mc Tiernan visited this area , as he was the only one who was interested to do research for the wreck and create a webpage about it . He was also one of the really few , who attended this humble ceremony for the commemoration of the wreck . No locals , no nothing .

Congratulations Mick , keep up the good work and the great spirit (not just the raki!!!)

Thank you Sir for honouring our country with your presence !

Michalis

Elafonisi is fantastic.I think it is one of the most beatiful beaches in Crete. I found a hotel with swimmingpool in a village 6km from the beach. Fantastic, a small familyhotel were the mother in this family was from Sweden. They serve very nice food and were very friendly. Try it!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
