The small islet of Spinalonga is a short boat trip from Elounda. It is the site of one of the most important and best fortresses the Venetians built on Crete and was constructed in 1579 to protect the harbour, entrance to the bay and anchorage of Elounda.

Having just read ´The Island´ I visited

Spinalonga in late August 2007. I caught the boat from Plaka and spent a couple of hours absorbing this haunting relic of courage and suffering. I will never forget that day, or my journey home because I met Victoria Hislop on the plane and she had been to Spinalonga that very day. What better ending to my holiday could I have wished for.

I too have just finished reading The Island and was moved by the characters and the in depth descriptions of Crete and Spinalonga. I visited Crete many years ago and loved the island.

I finished reading ´The Island´ last night and cant get it out of my mind. I was just browsing to see if it was a real island. After reading all the comments I would certainly like to visit one day.

I visited Spinalonga in 1984 and thought it quite spooky, without understanding its history. I have today just finished reading The Island, I thought it brought the Island I visited as a teenager to life. I hope to visit Greece again someday and view Spinalonga again with more respect for its past.

I visited Spinalonga 4 weeks ago in June and was fascinated by the history of the island. Take note that you must be properly dressed to enter the island´s church. I didn´t find out until I reached the island by which time it was too late. I will be returning in September and hope to visit the church then. "The Island" is a fascinating read.

I have never been to Spinalonga but after just finishing The Island and being very moved by it then I had to look it up.

Now I have an insight into what it looks like and can imagine what people must have felt like living there.

I visited Spinalonga in 2004 and found it a fascinatingly eerie and sad place. I´m now reading ´The Island´ which I´m thoroughly enjoying and now want to go back to Spinalonga again and will take more notice of what the guide talked about.

I visited Spinalonga in 2001 and the guide I felt only touched the surface of this amazing island and its history.

By chance I have just read ´The Island´, along with many others it creates a vivid picture of what life may have actually been like.

Anyone lucky enough to find themselves on Crete or going to Crete, really should take the time to visit the wonderful island.

I am also reading The Island and fully intend to visit this fascinating place. It is on my wish lists of places to visit. You can´t but be pulled into the history of the place and the book brings history to life even if the characters are fiction.
