The Turkish castle in Aptera
The Turkish castle in Aptera
The Turkish fort of Aptera commands an impressive view of Souda Bay. From the fort you have a good view of the entrance of Souda Bay and also an aerial view of the other Venetian fort, (known by its Turkish name) Itzedin, below Aptera. Itzedin was rebuilt in 1866 by the commander of Crete, Reouf Pasha. Today it is a prison.
