The beach of Elafonisi Island
The Elafonissi islet and surrounding beaches are among the most beautiful in Crete and a "must visit" site in the prefecture of Chania. This natural park is on the most southwest part of Crete and is reached from the city of Chania in about one hour and a half (75 km). Driving to Elafonissi on the highway from Chania to Kissamos takes about half an hour. The rest of the journey crosses the island north to south, passing through beatiful villages and the impressive Topolia Gorge and tunnel.
The shallow waters of the Elafonissi beach are turqoise blue and warm. The place attracts swimmers, spear-fishermen, and windsurfers from all over the world. The sand has a coral pink colour in some parts.
There are facilities such as umbrellas and self-service cafes and restaurants on the beach. The whole area is protected by the "Natura 2000" convention and is a natural refuge for many species of sea birds. The cedars growing on the beach are of a rare species and are surrounded by protective ropes. The flora on the sandy island of Elafonissi is unique all times of the year.
