The very important Byzantine church of Agios Ioannis is in the village of Liliano, near Kastelli, Pediada. It is a three-aisled basilica, in which the central aisle is higher than the others. The aisles are separated with arches supported by columns. The columns have column capitals of the Ionian style. The church has a narthex beside the entrance which is a room at right angles to the aisles and lower than the main church. The church has been built with material from previous churches. In the interior there is a small stairway and a column, remainders of an older church in the same place. The church of Agios Ioannis must have been built in the seventh or eighth century, one of the last churches built in the style of three-aisled basilica in Crete.
