The temple of Apollo, Gortyn
The temple of Apollo Pythios, which was the main sanctuary of Greek Gortyn from the seventh century B.C. Columns of Doric style are visible. Between the columns inscribed stones displayed the treaties of the Cretan cities with Efmenis of Pergamos (second century B.C.). The temple was converted later (fifth century A.D.) to a three-aisled Christian basilica which was a religious centre until the construction of Agios Titos. The Corinthian columns of the basilica are still visible.
