Cihan Türkoğlu was born in Turkey in 1983 and he began studying the Turkish folk lute known as bağlama (saz) when he was 14 years old. At the age of 17 he received third prize for his performing skills in a regional music competition and, at the age of 18, commenced his studies in classical at the Marmara University in Istanbul focusing on the cello. At the university he had the opportunity to study harmony, choral music, piano, music history, orchestration, traditional Turkish music and dances, and cello. During this period he composed for many theatrical productions and short films and he also participated as music director and composer in international projects supported by the EU in Portugal, Poland, Ukraine and Turkey. At the music project on the Greek island of Kythira in 2005, he gave a presentation about traditional Turkish music, focusing primarily on the Zeybek tradition (history, social factors, hierarchy, clothes, music and dance) as well as workshops in improvisation within specific ethnic traditions. He also directed a project of his own in Izmit in Turkey with participants from Greece, Turkey, Portugal and France. During this same period he also gave many concerts abroad in Greece, France, Portugal, and Lithuania. In the years 2005 and 2006 he furthered his studies on the bağlama under the tutelage of one of Turkey's grand masters of the instrument Mehmet Erenler, whilst simultaneously continuing his concert work with the cello in Turkey. It was at this time that he also created a jazz band for which he composed and with which he gave many performances. In 2007 he participated in the creation of a documentary about the Zeybek tradition in the capacity of a guide. Since 2009 he has been living in Athens, Greece creating and participating in various musical projects.
