Malia - The Central Court

The Central Court is laid out in a similar plan to that of Festos and Knossos, on a north-northeast, south-southwest axis. The shallow pit, exactly in the middle and directly opposite the Pillar Crypt, is believed to have been an altar. On the east side of the court was a portico. This architectual feature is evident in other Minoan structures. The portico had alternating columns and pillars and there are pairs of post holes between each pillar that possibly indicate support for a balcony railing.
