The Minoan villa in Amnisos

Archaeologists have discovered a two-storey Minoan villa from 1600 B.C. at the eastern base of the hill. Wonderful frescoes from this site, including the well-known lily frescoes, are in the Iraklion Museum. During the excavations here in the 1930s, the archaeologist Marinatos developed a theory: the volcanic eruption of Santorini might have been responsible for the destruction of the Minoan Palaces based on the discovery of pumice fragments.
