I worked in Georgioupolis for three summer seasons and came to love this village very much!

The small fishing vessels bring in a variety of fish, octopus etc. Go to the harbour and see how the fish are sold from a place under a huge eucalyptus tree, a weight hanging from one of its branches. The retired fishermen will be sitting there, watching life go on, no doubt also commenting on the tourists.

Take a walk out of town, choose the old road towards Vrisses, and after 10 minutes´ walk you will come to a small lake with an interesting fauna: Various geese and ducks, Kaspian turtles, eel, kingfisher... and many more.

On your way you may very well be lucky enough to meet a shepherd and his flock of sheep and goats. Say hello to Sifis with his long stick and heavy moustache.

Why would I mention the perfect beach when all tourists´ handbooks rave on about it? But many of these books do NOT know about Kalivaki Beach, the "secret" beach on the other side of the river Almiros, the river that forms the harbour of Georgioupolis. Cross the bridge, go down on the western side of the harbour mouth, and see for yourself. The sea water is less warm here because of the rivers that run out here.

If you get hungry in Georgioupolis you are lucky enough to have a splendid sea food taverna, "Poseidon" situated down a path that runs west from the main street, south of the Xanion Bank building. Lonely Planet Guide to Crete mentions "Poseidon" - and for a good reason!

If you are more into Pizza, go to Rodaria, that is another 100 yards further south from Xania Bank. A big, crisp pizza there is ... wow!!

And if you want a quick, cheap and delicious, typically Cretan meal (and who would not, being in Crete?), go to "Babis", situated in one of the streets that run eastwards from the town square.

Finally, you will at some point need a fancy drink or a large cold beer, and I strongly advise you go to Cafe "Naos", two buildings westwards away from the town square. Meet handsome and proud Stelios, his beautiful wife Georgia, and their four young and absolutely wonderful children. Enjoy old fashioned Cretan hospitality, have one drink too many, and share your thoughts, feelings and laughter with the people of "Naos". Notice the building - the owner created it himself and gave it the name Naos which means ´temple´. And yes, the village priest comes there regularly to sip coffee, talk to Stelios and Georgia, and keep an eye on his little flock.

From Georgioupolis you can go anywhere on the island (well, almost) with the swift and air conditioned KTEL-buses. But why leave Georgioupolis? It has got what a holiday takes. So enjoy, and let me hear about your adventures.

P.S. Ask Stelios about a village named Argyroupolis and a taverna there called Kastro.

Georgiopolis is one of the few places which still has its own character. Wonderful place with eucalipt trees which shower you in their special scent early in the morning. Try to get up early before all the other tourists an go for a walk. You will never forget it.

Visit fish restaraunt owned by Arkadi. Its on the other side of the river, just when you pass the old crane.

The best market owned by friends of mine Xenakis bros. Anna Xenakis. "Anna Market".

Good luck!

Georgioupolis is a nice village with everything that you need for a lovely holiday. It has a very nice and clean beach, although the water is a little bit colder than other places we´ve been to in Greece. It´s not crowded in the beach, you´ll have lot´s of space around you. The food in the local tavernas is very good, not the best in Greece (that would be Poros), but tasty and big choice of cretan meals. The prices are fare enough as I remember adn you can be sure of getting a glass of local raki if you get to know the owners/servants of the tavernas. The people are very nice in this part of Crete and tourism haven´t got to the village yet. You can find everything you need for self catering, there are several supermarkets and other shops. We´re going back this year in august, and are looking forward to a relaxing time in crete.

I can recommend, if you spend your Holiday in Georgioupoli, that visit the village Argyopoli, where there is a lot of Tavernas surronded of smal Waterfalls. And if you like ride a bicycle, rent one, and go for Expoli, or the Lake Kourna!

this place is truely amazing, i have been going there for at least 13 years and i´m only 17. A few years ago i thought it was a bit boring for someone of my age but now i just love the place and can´t stop going back. The beach is amazing and the people are extreamly friendly. You make a lot of friends in the village because it is not as busy as other places, however there is a nightclub in the town...which is quite good because everyone goes there. It good for families with teenagers because there is some nightlife but in a safe environment and you allways know where they are. Also there are a lot of young people who go. i go there every year and every year i go back, so do the other families with kids my age. One thing i know about this place is that people keep coming back once they have found it because it has not been changed into a fast food commercial city like some others.
