The Georgioupolis harbour
Georgioupolis is on the National Highway from Chania to Rethymnon: 39km from Chania, 20km from Rethymnon. It is a small town with hotels, restaurants and cafes, a sandy beach and a wildlife refuge. Georgioupolis is the beginning of a 10 kilometre stretch of beach that runs beside the highway from Chania to Rethymnon.

The small fishing vessels bring in a variety of fish, octopus etc. Go to the harbour and see how the fish are sold from a place under a huge eucalyptus tree, a weight hanging from one of its branches. The retired fishermen will be sitting there, watching life go on, no doubt also commenting on the tourists.
Take a walk out of town, choose the old road towards Vrisses, and after 10 minutes´ walk you will come to a small lake with an interesting fauna: Various geese and ducks, Kaspian turtles, eel, kingfisher... and many more.
On your way you may very well be lucky enough to meet a shepherd and his flock of sheep and goats. Say hello to Sifis with his long stick and heavy moustache.
Why would I mention the perfect beach when all tourists´ handbooks rave on about it? But many of these books do NOT know about Kalivaki Beach, the "secret" beach on the other side of the river Almiros, the river that forms the harbour of Georgioupolis. Cross the bridge, go down on the western side of the harbour mouth, and see for yourself. The sea water is less warm here because of the rivers that run out here.
If you get hungry in Georgioupolis you are lucky enough to have a splendid sea food taverna, "Poseidon" situated down a path that runs west from the main street, south of the Xanion Bank building. Lonely Planet Guide to Crete mentions "Poseidon" - and for a good reason!
If you are more into Pizza, go to Rodaria, that is another 100 yards further south from Xania Bank. A big, crisp pizza there is ... wow!!
And if you want a quick, cheap and delicious, typically Cretan meal (and who would not, being in Crete?), go to "Babis", situated in one of the streets that run eastwards from the town square.
Finally, you will at some point need a fancy drink or a large cold beer, and I strongly advise you go to Cafe "Naos", two buildings westwards away from the town square. Meet handsome and proud Stelios, his beautiful wife Georgia, and their four young and absolutely wonderful children. Enjoy old fashioned Cretan hospitality, have one drink too many, and share your thoughts, feelings and laughter with the people of "Naos". Notice the building - the owner created it himself and gave it the name Naos which means ´temple´. And yes, the village priest comes there regularly to sip coffee, talk to Stelios and Georgia, and keep an eye on his little flock.
From Georgioupolis you can go anywhere on the island (well, almost) with the swift and air conditioned KTEL-buses. But why leave Georgioupolis? It has got what a holiday takes. So enjoy, and let me hear about your adventures.
P.S. Ask Stelios about a village named Argyroupolis and a taverna there called Kastro.
Visit fish restaraunt owned by Arkadi. Its on the other side of the river, just when you pass the old crane.
The best market owned by friends of mine Xenakis bros. Anna Xenakis. "Anna Market".
Good luck!
