The Kastro on the Acropolis of Gortyn, Gortyn
The Acropolis of Gortyn is located on the west side of the river, north of the main road, on top of the hill. The walk is worthwhile if only for the view of the Mesara Plain and the aerial view of the fenced site of Agios Titos and the Odion below. The path starts right beside the river, on the west side goes north and starts ascending the hill just after the theatre opposite. The ascent takes about 15 minutes and leads you to the top. There are visible remains of the aqueduct which brought water from the springs on the south side of Psiloritis. On the Acropolis there are remains of a Roman wall that stands up to six metres high (called Kastro) and the seventh century B.C. temple of Athena. The temple was converted to a basilica in the sixth century A.D.
