The archaeological site of Knossos
Knossos is 5km southeast of Heraklion.
Constructed on a largely man-made hill, Knossos is the largest, most solidly-built and impressive of the island's Minoan palaces. It had a total area of 22,000 square metres and sustained a population of between 80,000 and 100,000 people.
