Nikos Kazantzakis' grave on the Martinengo Bastion, Iraklion
This bastion is the site of the grave of Nikos Kazantzakis (1883 - 1957), Crete's greatest writer. Kazantzakis was not buried in a church cemetery because of his unorthodox views. His simple grave bears an inscription from his own writing: "I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free". (See Mirtia)
