The Kastelli wall of the original Venetian city of Chania
The Kastelli wall of the original Venetian city of Chania
The Venetians fortified the Kastelli and it was the centre of their city. The Venetians rebuilt existing walls (using many Greco-Roman remains) and created the main thoroughfare (Corso). This is the present Kanevaro street and went from the east gate to the west gate (Porto Colombo) of Kastelli. The bombings of World War II destroyed both gates. There were two other gates. One is on the north-central side beside the Great Arsenal. Its steps rose to the present day offices of the Technical University of Crete. The south gate at Odos Katre is still visible.
On Sifaka street, you will see one of the minor doors of the Kastelli at Katre street and large portions of the inner wall with the columns and stones from Greco-Roman structures that the Venetians incorporated when they rebuilt the wall.
