The monastery of Agios Antonios or Apezanon is located on a plateau overlooking the Libyan Sea in southern Crete. The church of the monastery is a three-aisled basilica with the central aisle higher than the other two, dedicated to Saint Anthony, to the Transfiguration and to the Three Ierarhes. The church has a unique carved altar screen, interesting icons, and a bell tower. The monastery, resembling a fort like Toplou, was constructed during the Venetian rule. The Turks destroyed the monastery during their occupation. The rebuilt monastery is in a pleasant site and contains many valuable religious articles.
