On the other side of the west wall is the ancient site and the church of Agios Georgios. The church is built on the site of an ancient, probably Roman, temple. It has an extremely rare north-south orientation, which is in contrast to the more common east-west orientation of most Orthodox churches. It is thought to have been given this orientation because of the shape of the temple on which it was built.
