The West Court, Knossos
The visitor enters the palace through the West Court which has two raised causeways, or processional ways -- a typical Minoan feature -- and a bust of Sir Arthur Evans. On the right as you enter the court a Minoan ramp can be seen. The three large circular pits in the West Court are assumed to be granaries. In the bottom of one of the pits are the remains of a Middle Minoan house; one of the earliest identified ruins in Knossos.
The West Court reaches the facade of the palace on which evidence of fire damage is visible, indicating strong southerly winds at the time of the disaster, similar to those found at the other palaces. There is an altar in front of the West Palace face.
