From Zakros there is a path into the Valley of the Dead (in greek "Kilàda ton Nekròn"). There are caves in this gorge that were used as tombs in the Minoan era. The gorge terminates in Kato Zakros behind the archaeological site. The hike to the valley is about 8km long and will take about 2 1/2 hours. The gorge tends to have flash floods in the spring, so check in the village as to its safety.
