The Minoan Settlement in Monastiraki
There is a Minoan settlement of the Old Palace Period presently being excavated that archaeologists believe was large and important. They assume that it may have been a palace similar to those in Knossos, Festos and Malia from the Old Palace Period. Remains from a palace of the New Palace Period have also been found and they contain frescoes. Huge storerooms also found were filled with containers, many of which were completely intact and some had the remains of their original contents, such as grape skins left after the wine pressing! The dig is below the village but is not open to the public. The site can be seen through the fences.
