Hamezi is an important archaeological site, where archaeologists discovered a building from the Minoan period. The shape of the fortress-like building is oval, which makes it unique on Crete. It had two floors and a protected central courtyard inside. The building had a conduit and a moveable hearth. Originally, it was that it was a sanctuary, but new interpretations tend to agree that it was a kind of a fortress-like villa. From the windswept site of Hamezi there is a superb view of the valleys below and the city of Sitia in the distance.
