The Minoan site of Gournia
East towards Sitia and on the south side of the road you will see the archaeological site of Gournia. There is a sign on the road and an attendant at the site.
Gournia, an important Minoan settlement, is 19km southeast of Agios Nikolaos. The ancient name of the site is unknown. The modern name comes from the stone and wooden basins found at the archaeological site, before the main excavations took place. The American archaeologist, Harriet Boyd Hawes, conducted the excavation between 1901 and 1904. She discovered an entire town from the Middle and Late Minoan Periods (1700-1400 B.C.).
