During the early years of Turkish occupation, Gavriil Klados, the Abbot of Arsani, was imprisoned by the Turks for tax reasons. In 1897 he was killed in a battle while fighting the Turks. He was beheaded and the head was used for target practice. The monastery also sheltered resistance fighters during World War II.
Today, the monastery contains a sizeable museum displaying books, vestments, and other ecclesiastical objects.
