Stavros is at the north tip of the Akrotiri Peninsula, 17 km from the city of Chania.The road to Stavros leads north towards the airport of Chania, turning left near the Venizelos' Graves Park. It passes through the town of Kounoupidiana and the village of Chorafakia.

A circular bay at Stavros encloses the sandy beach and small dock. There is also a small fishing harbour here. The film "Zorba the Greek" used the bare mountainside that dominates one side of the bay.
